I do all my building of packages on an xp virtual machine and consequently also most of my testing on the same xp vm. Will go and test once in the office. 

Paul, I just want to make sure you have got the firmware uploaded correctly. Could you upload a program that does *not* blink the led from the standard arduino programming environment, then upload the firmware, and then an occam blink program, and perhaps then a different occam blink program. And let us know what happens.
