Hi all,
We currently run best on the Arduino, are currently out-of-step on the
Surveyor, are not yet 100% on the NXT, and the RCX needs lots of love.
If any of you have pointers (I could find some, no doubt) to a really
lo-fi robotics platform that we can slam some Arduinos on, I'll take
build them and take them to SIGCSE. I currently have a panel in (on
FOSS software), am submitting a poster, and could wrangle some bots as
well.
Thoughts? I'm thinking cardboard, some cheap motors, and a few cheap
sensors. Or, it could be more... but, I'm thinking quick, lo-fi, etc.
but enough that we can show off o-pi and Plumbing.
Cheers,
Matt

for Wranglers (CFW)
To: SIGCSE-members at listserv.acm.org
Howdy Cowboys and Cowgirls,
The 2011 Dallas SIGCSE will include a Texas-sized Robot Hoedown and
Rodeo where all ranch hands (participants) will be invited to program
robots for two events:
Hoedown - Ranch hands will program a robot to do-si-do along to a
15-30 second country music clip.
Rodeo - Robots will be programmed for a number of platform-specific challenges.
We are currently lookin' for Robot Wranglers, or in non-Texas
parlance, people or organizations who would like to exhibit their
robots and open their platforms up for programming by SIGCSE
participants. You do not need to be the original designer of the
robot hardware to be a wrangler or form a wranglin' team. We invite
anyone with a posse of robots and an inclination to educatin' others
to respond!
Being a Wrangler is serious work, and carries with it important
responsibilities:
* Wranglers need to bring at least a half dozen robots for
programming, as well as any other non-standard equipment required for
using the robots with ranch hands' computers. Robots can be any make
or model so long as they can be programmed.
* Someone from your wrangling team should be willing to provide a
15-minute tutorial during the Thursday and Friday morning sessions of
the conference to show how the robots can be programmed.
* Wranglers should suggest challenges for the Rodeo event; we are
looking to allow ranch hands to meet a challenge in 30 minutes to one
hour of programming.
* Wranglers should try to bring along a couple of apprentices (e.g.
students) who are trained on the robot platform. We are currently
trying to obtain travel funding for these apprentices but can't
promise it.
* Wranglers should prepare documentation to post online for ranch
hands to use when learning about the robots - likely many wranglers
will have these already created for use in teachin'.
Wranglin' also brings with it perks, notably:
* Show off your robots in demos in the exhibition hall.
* See dozens of your SIGCSE friends and neighbors have fun with the
robots you brought.
* Raise the visibility of your platform/software.
Please email tlauwers at gmail.com or kay at rowan.edu if interested in
becoming a Wrangler.
