A stab in the dark, but could it be that you didn't run:

. $HOME/pkg/kroc-avr/bin/avr-kroc-setup.sh



I have to run it every time I start a session.  I forget what messages I get when I don't do the setup.  I don't have an Arduino at hand so I can't check.
