That's the nice thing about DESTDIR -- you can do your installation,
then look at the DESTDIR to check it's OK before installing it.
(I don't know offhand whether the Debian tools do any sanity-checking on
the DESTDIR these days; GARstow certainly does. Anyway, it's reasonably
hard to break things through packages.)

Yep, absolutely. I'd be perfectly happy for you to do this stuff in
trunk if you want -- it's all incremental improvements...
